Aboriginal Learning and Cultural Centre at Royal Roads University

This project consisted of the conversion and renovation of a 2-story wood frame structure formerly used to store row boats into a vibrant multi-purpose space. Once completed, this building became the setting for Aboriginal student ceremonies, counselling and teaching programs with offices, academic and gathering spaces to serve as the campus’ Aboriginal Centre, “The Gathering Place”.

The scope of work included the installation of new exterior canopies and associated site servicing and site development. It also featured significant use of reclaimed timber beams, milled to provide structural members, wall paneling, door paneling and trims. Wide full height windows welcome the views of the natural environment and cedar siding and timber canopies highlight the elements of the building which is situated on the shores of Esquimalt Lagoon.
